Modeling Luxo Jr.

·338 words·2 mins

As planned, I started the tutorial from Omnis School, which teaches all the basics of Blender.

The project is inspired by Pixar’s famous first short film created in 1986, Luxo Jr, depicting a young desk lamp playing with a ball under the intrigued eye of its mother. This scene would later become the emblem of the animation studio.

After a week working on this video, I finished modeling the lamp and the basketball. I chose to differ slightly from the video by not using the suggested reference, opting instead for a Luxo model that is closer to the lamp used by Pixar.

Also, compared to the tutorial, I spent quite a bit of time creating holes in the parts, which wasn’t really necessary. In addition, the two extensions Bolt Factory and Extra Curve Objects are recommended for creating screws and springs, respectively, which are very useful for modeling this object.

As for TV series, I binge-watched a few. First, the end of season 2 of Fallout, which I didn’t understand the total absence of pace, as if the creators were hitting the brakes and saving some for later. It seems to me that the lore of the video game saga could easily fill several seasons, and showing such restraint doesn’t inspire confidence in the production’s motivations.

By association, I watched the British series Sweetpea, also starring Ella Purnell, and it’s less caustic or amusing than I imagined, but it’s worth watching.

Lastly, I began watching the Apple TV+ series Invasion. It’s quite good, original, and captivating. I particularly appreciate how they incorporate Sam Neill; it sets the tone.
